âWe go tonight,â said Bear as they walked downtown together. âRescue her.â
âI donât think thatâs a good idea,â said Iron Hand. âItâs late, and theyâre bound to be on guard against intruders at this time of night. Iâd say the chances of getting our brains splattered were quite high.â
âYou know this place?â
âSure I do, itâs an old ranch on the far side of town. Iâm telling you, if sheâs still there then they wonât be moving out at night, it would be too dangerous for them to go outside town in the dark.â
âThis is not our way,â said Bear. âIf we go tonight we get White Dove back and all this finished. I will take you back to the mountains and show you where to get the gold you so long for.â
âAnd Iâm telling you, weâre both dead on our feet. We need to get some shut-eye. Youâre a tracker, you say. We can get them now we know where she is.â
âI do as you ask,â said Bear. âTruth is I am tired and thatâs when you make mistakes.â
âI promise you, weâll be up real early, refreshed, and do this.â
âI hold you to promise.â
Together they made their way to the hotel.
âWhatâs he doinâ here?â The night clerk looked askance at the Indian. âManager wouldâve never let him stay if heâd known. Them Injuns are trouble.â
âWeâll be on our way soon,â said Iron Hand.
âMake sure you do, I sâpose if thereâs any bother weâre near the sheriffâs office,â said the young man.
âIâm telling you, there wonât be any trouble, weâre just going to grab us some shuteye and get out of here real early.â
âThis place always seems to have something going on,â said the clerk as the two men began to climb the stairs, âhope you donât mind sleepinâ in a dead manâs room.â
âGhost stories?â Iron Hand paused at the first landing.
âNope, literally just the night before you checked in a fella was found dead. His paw was contacted and came to get him. Real upset he was, the paw that is, the fella was beyond anything.â
âThatâs real bad,â said Iron Hand, turning away.
âLuckily his paw was nearby on business, seems heâs going to take him all the way back to Fort Morgan, fer burial that is.â This information seemed to interest Bear, who widened his eyes and gave a nod to his friend. They both came down to the desk and stood on the frowsty rug. Iron Hand looked at the clerk as if he was now interested too, although in reality he was more puzzled than anything else.
âHow so, who was his father?â
âName of Johnson, Lieutenant Johnson, anâ heâs takin the body out to Fort Morgan to bury him.â Iron Hand saw that his friend was looking at him again.
âHow did he die? Was he murdered?â
âNo, he was an alky, drank hisself to death, drowned on his own vomit. Reckon thatâs why the foreigner skedaddled after saying he wanted to visit him.â
âWhat foreigner?â
âSkinny, wild-looking guy with a real nice smile.
